Going Back to Work While Breastfeeding?

Let's Talk About the Part Nobody Prepares You For You've figured out how to feed your baby. You're finally starting to understand their routine. You know which cry means hungry, which one means tired, and which one means I dropped my pacifier and this is officially an emergency. And then suddenly, it's time to go back to work. For breastfeeding moms, returning to work can bring another entire round of adjustments — pumping schedules, bottles, milk storage, childcare, and figuring out how feeding fits into a workday. But there's another part of the transition we don't talk about quite as much: How it feels. You Can Be Ready to Go Back and Still Not Want to Leave Maybe you've been counting down the days until you can drink an entire cup of coffee while it's still warm. Maybe you miss your coworkers. Maybe you're excited to put on an outfit that doesn't have spit-up on it. And then the morning comes when you actually have to leave your baby. Suddenly, being excited about work and wanting to stay home can exist at exactly the same time. That's one of the strange things about new motherhood. Two completely opposite feelings can both be true. Your Breastfeeding Routine May Change Again You may have finally gotten comfortable breastfeeding at home — only to discover that returning to work introduces a completely new routine. Now there are pumping breaks to think about. Milk to label and store. Pump parts to wash. Bottles to prepare. And somehow, an entirely new bag of things to remember every morning. Give yourself time to figure out what works. If you're able, practicing with your pump and introducing your workday feeding routine before your first day back can make the transition feel a little less abrupt. And remember: your feeding journey is allowed to change. If breastfeeding looks different after returning to work than you imagined it would, that doesn't erase everything that came before it. Talk to Your Employer Before Your First Day Back Before returning, ask about the space and time available for pumping during your workday. Federal protections under the PUMP Act generally require covered employers to provide eligible nursing employees with reasonable break time and a private space, other than a bathroom, to express breast milk for up to one year after a child's birth. Individual circumstances and state protections can vary, so it's worth understanding what applies to you before your return. Knowing where you'll pump, where you'll store milk, and how breaks will fit into your day can remove a few unknowns from an already-big transition. The First Few Days May Feel Weird There's really no better word for it. You might find yourself looking at pictures of your baby between meetings. You might wonder what they're doing. You might feel relieved when you finally have a few uninterrupted hours to focus on something other than feeding and naps. And then you might immediately feel guilty for enjoying those hours. Give yourself room for all of it. Going back to work isn't just a logistical adjustment. It's an emotional one, too. Create a Routine That Helps You Reconnect Coming home can become one of the best parts of the day. Maybe you feed your baby shortly after you get home. Maybe you do bedtime together. Maybe you spend ten quiet minutes on the floor playing before worrying about dinner, laundry, or everything else waiting for you. It doesn't have to be elaborate. Creating a little moment that's consistently yours can help both of you settle into this new routine. Give Yourself Grace When the Plan Doesn't Go to Plan Maybe you forgot a pump part. Maybe baby drank more milk than expected. Maybe you didn't pump as much as you hoped. Maybe you're exhausted from waking up overnight and then getting dressed for work the next morning. Welcome to motherhood: the plan is mostly a suggestion. Your feeding routine may evolve as your baby grows, your schedule changes, and you learn what is actually sustainable for your family. If your breastfeeding experience already looks nothing like the one you pictured during pregnancy, read There's No "Normal" Breastfeeding Journey — And That's the Point. Because there's no single timeline, feeding method, or experience that defines a successful journey. This Is a New Chapter for Both of You Going back to work doesn't mean you're leaving one version of motherhood behind. You're simply figuring out how another version fits. The working version. The pumping-between-meetings version. The checking-the-clock-because-you-can't-wait-to-see-your-baby version. And eventually, what feels completely unfamiliar now will start to feel like your family's normal. Until, of course, your baby changes the routine again. They tend to be pretty good at that.

The 10-Minute Backseat Reset

Every Parent Should Do This Backseat Reset This September If you have a baby or toddler, there's a good chance your backseat has slowly become a second diaper bag. A stray sock. Two pacifiers. Three toys. An empty snack container. A burp cloth you forgot existed. Sound familiar? September is Baby Safety Month, making it a great reminder to take a few minutes to look at the spaces and products your baby uses every day — including your car. You don't need an elaborate checklist or an afternoon of reorganizing. Start with a simple 10-minute backseat reset. 1. Give the Car Seat a Quick Check Babies grow quickly, which means the setup that worked a few months ago may need adjusting. Check your car seat manufacturer's instructions for your child's current height and weight, harness positioning, headrest placement, rear-facing limits, and other recommendations. If you're unsure whether your seat is installed correctly, consider having it checked by a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. A few minutes spent reviewing the manufacturer's instructions can help make sure you're continuing to use the seat as intended. 2. Clear Out the Backseat Remove the things that have accumulated around baby's seat and take a look at what you're keeping within reach. Loose toys, bottles, bags and everyday clutter have a habit of building up quickly. Use your reset as an opportunity to decide what actually needs to stay in the car. A small essentials bag with diapers, wipes and an extra outfit? Useful. Seven toys your toddler hasn't touched in three months? Probably ready to head back inside. 3. Check the Gear You've Been Using Baby gear changes as quickly as babies do. Take a few minutes to check whether the products you're using are still appropriate for your child's age, size and developmental stage. It's also a good time to check manufacturer websites or Recalls.gov for current product recalls. 4. Reset Your Everyday Car Routine Some of the simplest habits are worth revisiting. Keep vehicle keys where children can't access them. Keep the car locked when it isn't being used. And never leave a child unattended inside a vehicle. If grandparents, babysitters or other caregivers regularly drive your child, make sure they understand your family's car routine, too. 5. Make Everyday Drives Feel a Little Less Chaotic Driving with a baby comes with its own set of distractions. Was that a cry? Did they drop their pacifier? Did they fall asleep? Being able to clearly see what's happening in the backseat can take some of the guesswork out of the drive. That's where Tiny Traveler can become part of your everyday routine. It gives you a clear, real-time view of your little one without relying on Wi-Fi, whether you're heading across town or starting another school drop-off. It's not about replacing good driving habits or proper car-seat use. It's simply another way to stay connected to what's happening in the backseat. Make It a Seasonal Habit Babies change constantly. Your routines should be allowed to change with them. Consider doing another quick backseat reset every few months. Check the car seat, clear the clutter, restock the diaper bag and make sure everything you're using still makes sense for your child's current stage. Ten minutes today can make the next few months of family drives feel a whole lot more organized. Is Grandma or Grandpa Part of Your Routine? If grandparents regularly help with childcare, Baby Safety Month is also a great opportunity to make sure everyone is on the same page.
